Weekend's Best Bets

The Infogol Analyst uses statistics and data to select the best bet from each of the Premier League, Championship and La Liga this weekend, producing a hat-trick of tips.

Barnsley vs Sunderland – SAT 3pm

Barnsley were well beaten by Sheffield United last weekend, conceding a lot of good chances once again – something they are doing on a regular basis. They need to improve, and fast, but such an improvement is difficult given the hand they have been dealt in recent seasons, losing key players in every transfer window. Sunderland were beaten by Leeds last time but were very unfortunate as they conceded very few chances, and failed to take the ones that they created themselves. They have looked very threatening going forward so far this season, with the pace and tenacity of James Vaughan, Lewis Grabban and Aiden McGeady causing defences plenty of problems so far. They are expected to take advantage of a weak-looking Barnsley defence and should get back to winning ways.

Bet: Sunderland win @ 21/20

Girona vs Malaga – SAT 1915pm

Girona nearly caused the upset of the week, going two goals up against Atletico Madrid before being pegged back. They were unlucky not to come away with all three points in that game, as they limited Atletico to just low-probability chances but created high-probability chances against last season’s best defence. Malaga were beaten at home by Eibar on Monday, a game in which both teams created some good chances. They have shown, especially towards the end of last season, that they have the capability to create a lot of chances, and this match should see both teams hit the net.

Bet: BTTS @ 9/10

West Brom vs Stoke – SUN 1pm

West Brom got their second 1-0 win of the season when beating Burnley last weekend. They were slightly fortunate to come away with all three points, but continue to look solid in defence. The additions made by Tony Pulis look to have been very productive, with most recent signing Gareth Barry proving to be a great defensive shield infront of the defence against Burnley, and he is expected to play a similar role in this match. Stoke shocked Arsenal at the weekend, winning 1-0 thanks to Jese’s first goal for the club. He looked lively throughout, and offered Stoke an outlet, bringing a wow factor back to the Potters. They have defended well so far this season, against Arsenal and Everton, limiting their opponents to low-probability chances. With both teams looking strong defensively, a low-scoring game is expected at the Hawthorns.

Bet: Under 2.5 goals @ 1/2
