Super Sunday Preview GW16

A mouth-watering day of football takes place on Sunday, with three matches that see Southampton vs Arsenal, Liverpool vs Everton and Manchester United vs Manchester City. There is plenty at stake in all three games, and our Analyst previews the games, selecting the best bets along the way.

Southampton vs Arsenal

Southampton host Arsenal in the first of the three matches, with both teams looking to get back to winning ways. Southampton have won just one of their last six matches, meaning they languish in mid-table, however they have shown glimpses of what they are capable of under Mauricio Pellegrino, including a commanding win over Everton and a solid performance against Manchester City in which they were unfortunate to come away empty handed.

Arsenal were unfortunate in the game of the season so far when beaten 3-1 by Manchester United last weekend, a match in which they were only denied at least a point by a sensational performance by David de Gea. They generated 4.9 xG in that game, and were very unfortunate to lose, but they once again showcased a defensive weakness that keeps coming to the fore. This should be a good game, with both sides possessing good attacking options, so expect both teams to get on the scoresheet.

Liverpool vs Everton

Liverpool come into this Merseyside derby in great form, having won seven of their last nine matches. They overwhelmed Brighton in a 5-1 win last week before following that up with a 7-0 thrashing of Spartak Moscow in the Champions League. The front four of Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were in breath-taking form against Spartak, good enough to give new Everton manager Sam Allardyce nightmares ahead of this derby.

Everton themselves come into this on the back of successive league wins over West Ham and Huddersfield, winning 4-0 and 2-0 respectively, with the two clean-sheets being the most pleasing aspect ahead of this game. They face an uphill battle here though, and the Reds are expected to be too strong in a high-scoring game.

Manchester United vs Manchester City

Manchester United have had a great week, beating Watford 4-2 and Arsenal 3-1 in the Premier League, before securing top spot in their Champions League group with a 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow – creating plenty of chances in all of those matches. Though they continue to look good going forward, they have shown a defensive vulnerability, highlighted especially by Arsenal last weekend, as if it wasn’t for David de Gea there may have been a different outcome. They have conceded just nine goals in the league, the best defensive record, but from the chances they have conceded in matches, they would be expected to concede closer to 21 (21.3 xG against), so there is still room for improvement.

Manchester City made it 13 league wins on the bounce with another come-from-behind victory last weekend, this time beating West Ham 2-1. They keep edging teams out on the scoresheet, but their process remains consistent and their performances have warranted those victories. They have been the best team in both attack (39.6 xGF) and defence (11.1 xGA) in the league this season, and they are expected to extend their lead at the top of the table in this Manchester derby.
