La Liga GW7 Review

Six home wins in La Liga in GW7, with Real Madrid and Barcelona winning comfortably. Entertaining games at Celta and Sociedad contributed 14 goals to a great weekend of La Liga action. Infogol’s Analyst reviews the action, assessing performances and not just results to give a fairer reflection on each team.

Actual vs Expected Goal (xG) totals La Liga GW7

The results in La Liga were all relatively ‘fair’ compared to recent weeks, with the most ‘unfair’ result being Valencia’s win over Athletic Bilbao. In a game which both teams generated a lot of scoring opportunities, Valencia won the match 3-2 thanks to a Rodrigo goal. Bilbao can count themselves unlucky not to have taken anything from the game though, after another good attacking display. Valencia up to third and remain unbeaten.

Celta Vigo drew 3-3 with Girona in an entertaining game in which both teams generated a host of scoring chances. Celta were unfortunate not to get all three points after a really good attacking display in which they had a lot of clear-cut chances. Girona were slightly fortunate to score three from their chances, but were due some fortune.

Celta and Girona share six goals

Atletico Madrid were held to a goalless draw by Leganes in GW7, a disappointing result that followed their Champions League defeat to Chelsea. They didn’t look their usual selves, not playing at a high-intensity and not taking their chances, not that they had many.

Villarreal bounced back from defeat and got a win for their new manager with a 3-0 thumping of Eibar. They generated a lot of good chances and deservedly got the three points. Alaves got their first points of the season with a 2-0 away win at Levante. They looked very threatening going forward in that game, creating a lot of high-quality chances, and if they continue in this fashion they won’t be near the bottom for long.

Alaves get their first points

Real Sociedad and Real Betis shared eight goals at the Anoeta in what was an excellent advertisement of Spanish football. Both teams had chances, but Sociedad created the better quality ones and were perhaps unlucky not to get all three points. Deportivo got another home win, this time against Getafe, in another game of a lot of chances for each team – with the home side just edging it.

Sevilla, Barcelona and Real Madrid all won at home and al won without conceding, beating Malaga, Las Palmas and Espanyol respectively. All three were dominant throughout and dominant on expected goals (xG) and deserved the three points.

Sevilla looking good so far

GW8 Team to BackAlaves

Alaves were impressive in victory over Levante last time out, creating a lot of good chances in the process. They host a Real Sociedad team in GW8 that have struggled in recent weeks and concede a lot of chances to their opponents, making the 9/4 price about Alaves look good value.
