Chelsea vs Manchester City Match Preview

The big game of the weekend sees reigning champions Chelsea host league leaders Manchester City, with both teams coming into the game in good form. Infogol’s Analyst previews the match and offers up some recommended bets.

Chelsea have recovered well from defeat to Burnley on the opening day of the season and come into this match on the back of an impressive 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.

It was a late Michy Batshuayi winner in Madrid, but Chelsea’s big-money signing Alvaro Morata was also on the scoresheet again, continuing his great start to the season. He netted a hat-trick last weekend against Stoke, and, on Wednesday’s evidence, looks to have already struck up a good understanding with Eden Hazard.

Morata and Hazard combining well in Madrid

Chelsea have over-performed so far this season, though, scoring 12 goals from an expected goals (xG) of just 6.7, failing to create a lot of high-quality chances on a consistent basis. However, if they can replicate the performance from midweek against arguably one of Europe’s best teams, then they will provide their opponents with their biggest test so far this season.

Manchester City

Manchester City have been very impressive so far this term and top the league on goal difference after six matches, while also blowing teams away in Europe. In their nine matches so far this season, they have an aggregate score of 29-3.

It’s therefore no surprise that they have the highest expected goals for (xGF) in the league so far this season with 17. Perhaps more surprisingly, though, Manchester City have the lowest expected goals against (xGA) so far this season with just 4.2.

City’s process is the best in the league

They have got injury worries, though, with Benjamin Mendy out for a while after a cruciate ligament injury, while top-scorer Sergio Aguero is out after an unfortunate car accident in midweek – having both players missing, as well as captain Vincent Kompany, will be a huge loss.

Though they have key players missing, City’s process is expected to remain at a higher level than Chelsea have managed so far this season, giving the visitors a narrow edge in what looks set to be a tight game between two strong teams.
