Brazil Serie A GW22 Review
GW22 of Brazil’s Serie A came to an end with a tight match on Monday, and as ever there were plenty of talking points. Using expected goals (xG), Infogol’s Analyst takes a look at the action, assessing performances and not just results. The Analyst will aim to paint a clearer picture of the week’s matches, including selecting a Team to Back for GW23.
Actual vs Expected Goal (xG) totals GW22
Leaders Corinthians were beaten at home for the second game running, losing to Atletico Goianiense at the weekend. It was their second 1-0 defeat in successive home matches, and the second time they have been extremely unlucky to do so. This result was the most ‘unfair’ of the week, and the season so far, as the hosts created a host of chances, failing to take advantage – while conceding very few opportunities to their opponents. Infogol calculates that Atletico Goianiense had just a 1% chance of winning this match from the chances created, so were very fortunate.
Back to back home defeats for Corinthians
Botafogo’s 2-1 victory over Bahia was also seen as an ‘unfair’ result, as Botafogo created very little in terms of quality chances, but managed to edge out their opponents. Coritiba and Vitoria were involved in what was an entertaining game with plenty of chances on Monday, as both created great opportunities. There wasn’t much between the teams, so Vitoria’s 1-0 win was an ‘unfair’ result. They have now won four of their last five matches, and have taken some scalps in that time.
There were few chances in the match between Avai and Chapecoense, which ended 1-0 to Avai, but it was the opposite in Sao Paulo, as Palmeiras and Sao Paulo shared six goals. The home team edged the result, winning 4-2 in a match which both teams created plenty of chances. Flamengo secured a deserved home win thanks to a 2-0 success over Atletico Paranaense in which they were the better team throughout.
Palmeiras win Choque-Rei
Cruzeiro were the better team once again in their match, but couldn’t take advantage and had to settle for a point against Santos. Santos are now unbeaten in 12 matches, but have drawn seven of those. Atletico Mineiro and Vasco da Gama registered away wins, beating Ponte Preta and Fluminense respectively. Both deserved their wins, after solid performances in which they created plenty of chances.
GW23 Team to Back – Vitoria
Vitoria were fortunate to beat Coritiba in GW22, but have been playing well of late, winning four of their last five matches to move out of the relegation zone. They face Fluminense in GW23, and can get another win against an inconsistent opponent.
