Brazil Serie A GW7 Review
Infogol’s Analyst reviews GW7 of the Campeonato, using underlying performance data to assess performances and not just results, helping to generate a Team to Watch for GW8.
Actual vs Expected Goal Totals GW7
Flamengo ended a four match winless run in the league by comfortably beating Ponte Preta in game week 7, a game in which they continued their good performances with a dominant display. They created 1.88 xG, conceding just 0.49 xG, with young star Vinicius Junior playing a key role in the success.
Youthful exuberance: Vinicius Junior producing the goods for Flamengo
Game week 7 team to watch, Chapecoense, also registered a home win as they beat Vasco da Gama 2-1. They once again showcased their defensive solidity, conceding just 0.28 xG, conceding a total xG of just 5.18 – the fewest in the league so far this season.
There were three draws in midweek, all of which were deserved results from closely fought matches. Botafogo and Vitoria shared the spoils in an entertaining game that finished 2-2, with Vitoria fighting back from two goals down to rescue a point. Goalless draws in matches between Sport Recife and Sao Paulo, and Coritiba and Bahia were extra tight matches in which neither team created many chances or xG.
Gremio extended their excellent start to the season with a deserved victory away at Fluminense, meaning they sit in second place having picked up 18 points from a possible 21. They once again created some good chances, but it was two stunning fee-kicks that earned them a 2-0 victory.
Leaders Corinthians rode their luck in a 1-0 win over Cruzeiro, that after creating very few chances themselves, with Cruzeiro’s Abila missing a guilt-edge opportunity to level things up. That result means they remain unbeaten this season – winning six of their opening seven. Santos also registered a 1-0 home win, beating Palmeiras, and they too were fortunate as they were second best in quality of chances created – Palmeiras’ dismal away form continues.
Leading the way: Corinthians top after seven matches
A team that unexpectedly find themselves in the bottom four after seven matches is Atletico Mineiro, that thanks to a 1-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers Atletico Paranaense. They were unlucky in this game though, having dominated the match from beginning to end (mainly due to Paranaense being reduced to 10-men after 40 minutes) they failed to take any of their chances and were sucker-punched late on after a defensive mistake. Infogol calculated that Mineiro would have avoided defeat 82% of the time according to chances created.
The performance of game week 7 came courtesy of Atletico Goianiense, who beat fellow promoted side Avai to make it consecutive home wins. They were dominant from beginning to end, and although they scored from two penalties, they still generated a host of xG – 3.39 in total, 1.77 without the two penalties.
Performance of the week: Atletico GO finding form
What was arguably most impressive about this performance though was the defensive aspect, as they conceded just 0.23 xG in what was their best defensive performance to date, and they are this week’s team to watch.
GW8 Team to Watch – Atletico Goianiense
